Why is orthodontics important?
An attractive smile and improved self-image are just some of the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Alleviating and preventing physical dental health problems is just as important. Without treatment, orthodontic problems can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, gum tissue recession, bone destruction, chewing and digestive difficulties, speech impairments, tooth wear or loss and other dental injuries. During your consultation, Dr Edwards will provide you with knowledge of where your smile stands with all of these issues. We will make sure you are making a decision about braces based off of what is best for your smile.
Why should I consider orthodontics if my front teeth look straight?
Although your teeth may look straight, they may not be in the correct position. Occlusion (the way your teeth come together) is a very important puzzle piece in dental health. If your teeth are not occluding properly, it can lead to major problems with the teeth, gums, and bone surrounding teeth in the future. One of the chief goals of orthodontics is to create a bite that permits all of your teeth to share the bite forces as efficiently as possible.
Will braces hurt?
Orthodontic patients may experience slight discomfort the first week after their braces are put on and right after the wires are changed on your braces . Aspirin, non-aspirin pain reliever or ibuprofen will ease any discomfort.
At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?
Today, orthodontic treatment is being started at an earlier age to take advantage of your child’s jaw growth. Your child will be evaluated for orthodontics during each examination for growth, spacing, crowding, and occlusion using measurements and radiographs. Early orthodontics may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications.
We don’t only treat children for orthodontics. We also treat many adults to help them get the smile they have always dreamed of having. Your hygienist will talk to you during your examination and answer any questions you may have about adult orthodontics.
How long will I have to undergo orthodontic treatment?
The time needed to undergo orthodontic treatment will vary for each patient, and always depends on how much your jaw needs to change and how far your teeth must move. We are committed to making your treatment as swift and effective as possible.
Am I too old for orthodontics?
About 25% of orthodontic patients today are adults. Many adults are correcting problems that were never treated when they were children, and can now experience the satisfaction of a perfect smile.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an innovative way of moving teeth using clear aligners instead of conventional braces. Your aligners are worn all day except when eating or drinking. Invisalign offers an easy way that most people won’t even notice. Invisalign aligners are removable so you can eat normally and easily brush and floss. Invisalign treatment is usually 12-18 months.
What is Malocclusion?
The technical term for teeth that do not fit together correctly is ‘malocclusion’. Most malocclusions are inherited, however, it is possible to acquire a bad bite from habits such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking. The premature loss of baby teeth or the extraction of adult teeth can cause the development of malocclusion. Inherited malocclusions are usually caused by difference between the size of the teeth and the size of the jaw structure. Whether inherited or acquired, malocclusions affect not only the alignment of the teeth, but also the appearance of the face.
How much will it cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of treatment. The average cost is typically between $3000- $6000. Today many dental policies include orthodontic benefits for both conventional braces and Invisilign making orthodontic fees more affordable than ever before.
